It's not easy to overcome it, but with a bit of effort you can live your life anxiety-free.

It’s not easy to overcome it, but with a bit of effort you can live your life anxiety-free.

Have you’ve ever experienced fear of something you knew was unrealistic? Do you often drift away with your thoughts into the future and panic about what could happen? Have you’ve ever experienced a panic attack? Do you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks? If you’ve answered to any of the above questions with “Yes,” then you are just like millions of people around the world, who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

It’s one of the most prevalent psychological disorders in the modern world, and yet many people don’t even realize that they suffer from it. Even though they acknowledge something is wrong, they blame themselves and their nature and, as a result, are unable to react to the actual root of the problem.

Regardless of what the cause of your fears is and how strong they are, their negative influence on everyday functioning can be substantial. Because of that, it is important to diagnose anxiety quickly, and start recovery process as soon as possible. Having a prolonged fear caused by different triggers such as specific events, situations or places may force people to abandon their plans and, makes them unable to live to their full potential. Unfortunately, sometimes even the strongest people become paralyzed by fear; moreover, very often its root sits deep in their imagination and has no justification in reality. Luckily, every fear, realistic or not, can be overcome.

You can beat your anxiety

Those who know that they suffer from anxiety and panic disorder, can start their treatment any time they want (the sooner, the better). Unfortunately, many times the whole idea of therapy begins and ends with medication, which is too often prescribed in cases which could have been successfully treated using lifestyle changes and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy – or methods derived from it). Moreover, natural methods are often undervalued and treated as outdated and ineffective. On top of that, many people choose artificial medication because swallowing a pill once or twice a day is much more convenient than making lifestyle changes, some of which might require a little bit of effort.

Another problem is that GAD is very often misdiagnosed, or there’s no diagnose at all as people don’t understand or don’t know the most common symptoms. The fact that they can differ between people, significantly increases the number of individuals who don’t realize that what they experience is caused by a treatable medical condition. In the US alone, at least 3% of the total U.S. population suffers from GAD, but the number can be double that, considering the low understanding of the problem. Luckily, anxiety disorder is often diagnosed during an examination for other potential conditions – if that didn’t happen, the number of diagnosed and currently treated people would be even lower than the current one. And anxiety affects all people – both adults and children.

In fact, it may harm anyone

Young minds are prone to criticism, abuse or even things that at first may sound trivial but for a kid they are very meaningful, and may be hurtful. A school is another place where aggressive, stronger individuals tend to bully the weaker ones. This may lead to the fear of learning, school or even people (many times people who are afraid of spending time with others, especially in groups, owe this to either their early childhood or school years). Same goes with demanding teachers at school and the overwhelming rat race, which only becomes stronger, and peaks during university years and in the early career life.

All the above may lead to anxiety. And it doesn’t take much to develop an anxiety disorder; it affects both children and adults, men and women (according to some studies women are more prone to developing anxiety than men). Many times anxiety disorder is carried over from childhood or teenage years to adulthood. That’s when many people start thinking about treatment – their fears, low self-esteem or experienced panic attack become a real burden. Unfortunately, this may sometimes be a bit late, considering the influence of teenage years and experiences on the future choice of career. That’s why anxiety in children should be treated as soon as it’s diagnosed. This can save years of suffering and help ensure a bright, anxiety-free future of your kids.

Before you rush to treat your kids, please keep in mind that although medication is one of the most prevalent ways of treating anxiety in children, it doesn’t have to be the best choice. Again, trying more natural methods, especially those based on CBT or a face to face therapy with a specialist can be a better solution long-term, especially that it can save your children the side-effects of medication and withdrawal effects in the future. It also protects them from potential addiction to anti-anxiety medication because, if there are no other methods involved in the treatment, the dosage may increase over time instead of decreasing, what leads to addiction.

Wake up, it’s me – a panic attack.

Panic Attack can appear out of nowhere; luckily, you can train yourself to easily overcome it.

Panic Attack can appear out of nowhere; luckily, you can train yourself to easily overcome it.

Anxiety, constant fear, tensions, and lack of self-confidence and motivation are not the only things that follow GAD. Much worse and stronger are panic attacks, which may be a part of your generalized anxiety disorder, or may be affecting your life independently. This means that you may experience panic attacks even if you believe your everyday life is anxiety-free. Of course, most triggers of panic attacks aren’t real and with the use of a few techniques, they can be stopped or even eliminated from your life. Or, to say it more clearly – the trigger itself is real, (such as a crowd in a store), but what’s the real cause of panic attack are one’s thoughts about that crowd.

One of the worst types of panic attacks is the one that gets you in the middle of the night. At that time, it can be hard to calm down; all the people around you are usually sleeping, and people experiencing a panic attack quite often decide not to tell others about that, especially if it’s 3 or 4 am in the morning. Luckily, those too can be eliminated over time, quite often even without medication.

The proper choice of treatment depends on many factors, including their cause, your other disorders, etc. Since I am not a professional, I may only give you certain hints or show you potential solutions. Before you move on to searching for a solution, please remember that there’s nothing scary about the night-time, and most of the time it’s just imagination playing tricks on you.

Relax!

Stress is killing you – I’m sure you know that. Did you know that high level of stress and anxiety can increase the risk of developing depression and even dementia? What’s more, living a stressful life enhances the risk of developing anxiety disorder – that’s why finding a balance in your life and knowing how to relax can not only make your life more enjoyable but may actually help you prolong it. This is the reason why, you should consider planning your life well, so that you have a work-life balance and enough time for relaxation. It doesn’t have to be much. Sometimes even ten or twenty minutes a day or so is enough – especially if you use special relaxation techniques, such as meditation, which is one of the few recommended relaxation techniques that may decrease your anxiety long-term.

Unfortunately, anxiety disorder and panic attacks are  not all that there is.

Generalized anxiety disorder and panic attacks may link to other disorders, such as agoraphobia or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Agoraphobia makes you fear places in which you may experience panic attacks, especially if these are public places. Even worse, if such places are full of people who could see your panic and (as your imagination suggests) ridicule you. If left untreated, agoraphobia may eliminate you from any forms of social life, making you unable to function around other people. In severe cases of agoraphobia, the intense fear of the outer world makes affected individuals unable of leaving their own houses.

Just like Agoraphobia, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) can have a very negative influence on your life, making your imagination go crazy. This disorder involves certain unwanted and disturbing urges and thoughts, which are then followed by a compulsion, which is a particular type of behaviour necessary to quiet your mind. Of course, suffering from anxiety disorder does not automatically imply that you suffer from the OCD or Agoraphobia; nevertheless some people suffer from both disorders.

Be natural, don’t give up.

Certain diet ingredients can weaker the symptoms of anxiety.

Luckily, there are natural remedies which do not force you to take any addicting medicine. One of the best ways of overcoming anxiety disorder is CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), which is a problem-focused form of psychotherapy. In the treatment of anxiety, CBT involves a confrontation of the objects and activities that cause the biggest fear in order to desensitize you and help you “unlearn” the harmful condition that has been the root of experienced fear and anxieties. This form of therapy can help people who suffer from (even severe) anxieties, overcome most of their fears and become anxiety-free.

Other natural methods involve adding more anti-anxiety food to your diet, building positive habits in order to keep your mind busy and elevate self-confidence, creating and following exercise routines and using relaxation and visualization techniques. Sometimes, small, step-by-step changes in your life may lead to a huge transformation that not only helps you get rid of anxiety also leads to positive shifts in many other aspects of your life.

Similarly, there are natural remedies which if used frequently decrease the risk of anxiety disorder or help you ease the symptoms of it. One of the most popular is chamomile. A chamomile tea is a very relaxing drink that can also help you fight anxiety and depression long-term. All you need is a cup or two of chamomile tea per day.

The Internet is there to help you.

Thanks to the increase in access to knowledge, you don't have to spend thousands on therapies.

In the past, people who suffered from anxiety disorder had little chances of researching the causes of the symptoms that they experience – at least on their own. What’s even worse, even if they knew what their problem was, they had very limited access to information and the only way to recover were expensive therapies with psychology specialists. Even today, face to face therapies are expensive, and it sometimes takes months to get to a good psychotherapist. Luckily, the Internet has significantly changed the way people access information – it has given the masses access to almost infinite resources on any topic that they may need – anxiety and panic disorders included.

Of course, it’s easy to get lost in the flood of information. Not all the available information is accurate; sometimes it may be outdated or entirely invalid. Luckily, there are also complete anxiety and panic attack solutions, created by professionals who want to bring potential solution closer to a much bigger number of people. You have to be careful when choosing an online product that’s targeting the problem of anxiety and panic disorders, as many con artists may want to scam you and take your hard-earned cash away, giving you nothing in return. That’s why it’s important to use recommended and widely recognized methods of overcoming your anxiety. Everyone who has been diagnosed or believes he suffers from anxiety or panic disorder should try at least one of them.

Although there are various ways to prevent or stop anxiety and panic attacks, it is important to know that there’s no a 5-minute one-click solution – regardless of what everyone tells you. There are easy ways, but they all require effort and strong will to overcome the problem. On the other hand, certain behaviours, such as marijuana and alcohol abuse, fast food consumption or slacking in doing what you should be doing, may deepen your anxiety. The last thing can even become a vicious circle, where a person doesn’t do what he or she should be doing  (studying, working, taking care of a family, etc.), what strengthens the anxieties and further decreases motivation and discipline. This, in turn, leads to never-ending self-regrets and increasing fear, what slowly becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure.
